Some people us the figure of 8 to connect it and some would pull it over the back of the van and then tie it on the front to hold it steady.
When we were organizers for the BOC we had a Navigator xxl and we used to fit it over the back of the van and we could get 20 people sat in it on chairs and that included John Page and Milton with his arm chair.
But of course it depends on which awning that you have brought plus when you say the awning rail is to large are you sure that you are not using the gutter you can buy a length of awning rail from any caravan and camping store at around £10 (I thin)
