Recently had both the batteries go fairly flat on the Bambi, so took them both off and put them on charge. The vehicle one got recharged first, so I put it back in, turned the key and...nothing. Not even a glimmer at the dashboard. Checked the earth, and the connection to the starter, all ok... Hell, I thought, the battery has died, so I took it off and put the second battery on (it's not a leisure one, just a normal car battery). Still nothing... So I checked both batteries with a 12volt light and hey presto, they both had plenty of juice. After much hair tearing (which I can't afford, believe me), I thought 'I don't suppose it needs both batteries in situ to work, does it?'. Connected them both up, and she turned over so fast she nearly took off! Now that makes absolutely no sense to me at all....Is it normal to have to have the ancilliaries battery in place to be able to start the vehicle? Or has someone screwed up the connections at some point? The ancilliaries battery has got several wires running to it's positive terminal, whereas the main battery has just the main starter connection and one other cable that I guess goes to the zig unit. Anyone got any ideas?

Hi Shaun, I'd say a connection problem somewhere. Maybe the starter motor is coming off one battery and the rest of the electrics of the other? Weird, but that's all I can think of.
To debug.... Put just the leisure battery on and see if the lights all come up on the dash.

Now that's a good idea! Thanks, I'll give it a try at the weekend.

Sounds like a dodgy connection/or layout - earth??

Strangely enough I had this issue recently , I bought a new battery and a few times I would have no ignition light (everything dead) then all of a sudden would jump to life.
Last week it got worse and I found the new battery at fault.
The battery indicated it was OK on meter but as soon as load was applied (ignition on) the level dropped to 5v.
Battery replaced and no problem!!

Everything is working hunky dory at the moment so I'm loathed to touch anything!

I am amazed by the number of tales, in the different circles I move in, of defective new batteries. This has even happened to us - a defective terminal!
